As we expected

1st May 2007

cancer (1)200Meeting with the consultant yesterday confirmed Mrs D has cancer.

The Cat scans show a growth on her right lung and a smaller abnormality on her left. There’s a chance the latter could be old scar tissue from TB Mrs D had as a child so a biopsy is planned for next week to determine type of cancer affecting her right lung and to take closer look at the abnormality on her left. If that too is cancerous, this would rule out surgery as an option and she will need to have chemotherapy.

(As soon as we returned home, Mrs D logged on to the Internet to see if she could still drink red wine while having chemotherapy!)

Paradoxically, after the stress of waiting, it was a relief to finally know what we are dealing with and we were both more upbeat following the meeting with the consultant.

11th May 2007

RadiographerMrs D had a second Cat Scan this morning and a biopsy.

Have to wait 7-10 days apparently for the results to come through before doctors can decide on a treatment plan. However, 2 bits of good news so far. The radiographer this morning is of the opinion that the ‘abnormality’ on her left lung is old scar tissue from the time she had TB as a child. And, chatting to the young (very attractive!) nurse – purely as a means of obtaining information, you understand – I found out that according to Mrs D’s case notes she has been marked up as a ‘priority patient’ Given how strapped for cash the NHS is, we take this to mean that the growth on Mrs D’s right lung has been identified at an early enough stage that it would be financially worthwhile to spend some of those scarce resources treating her.

Drove Mrs D straight from the hospital to our local for a baked potato and a bottle of Merlot to ‘celebrate’.

grapes_and_glass_image11_200She’s now feeling weary and has gone to bed for a nap (it’s 14.50hr here). But when she awakes I’ve got another 2 bottles of red in for her. I know, I know …. I spoil that woman!

Drinking one’s way through issues is a wonderful way of coping, one I employ often. I applaud you both for your good taste in choosing red wine!! Ben and Jerry’s ice cream works well too.

Wine and ice-cream combined 😯 …. sounds like curdling shit to me!

Julie… one doesn’t necessarily imbibe them at the same time! That would be greedy and excessive

Why do you have a photograph of Jeremy Clarkson holding a framed picture of a plate of sausages in your post?

I would hope that ‘worth of treatment’ was not based on age alone?
