Meeting at hospital yesterday morning confirmed tumour in Mrs D’s right lung is large cell cancer. The plan is to effect a cure by removing upper third of her right lung.

However – before removing part of her right lung, the doctors need to determine the exact nature of the ‘abnormality’ in her left lung. Accordingly, she will be going into hospital a week on Tuesday for an op on her left lung. A biopsy will be taken and the results analysed while she is still in theatre. These results will determine how the tumour in her right lung is treated.

There are 3 possibilities –

a. The ‘abnormality’ is old scar tissue from TB as a child. If this is the case, they will close her chest up, then book her in for a 2nd op to remove the upper 3rd of her right lung

b. The ‘abnormality’ is malignant but is NOT RELATED to the tumour in her right lung. If this is the case, they will remove the bottom half of her left lung there and then. Allow her 4-6 weeks to recover. Then call her back to have the upper 3rd of her right lung removed.

c. The ‘abnormality’ is malignant and IS RELATED to the tumour in her right lung. This is the worst scenario. For the same cancer to infect two anatomically separate parts of the body, the cancer would need to have entered her bloodstream. If it is in her bloodstream then there is no point in doing any surgery either on her right or her left lung. Only option then would be to try chemotherapy.

Much then depends on the results of the op on her left lung on 27th Jun. We will be hoping for ‘a’ or ‘b’ above, but it is hard to dismiss the thought that it could turn out to be ‘c
