A Sair Fecht !!!

December 11, 2009

30th Apr 2008

The recent euphoria of Mrs D surviving beyond 12 months from diagnosis did not last long.

The first sign that something was amiss came as we travelled to work. Mrs D was driving and I was half dozing in the passenger seat. I had just started to tell her that – in my humble opinion – she was a bit close to the parked cars on my side when, ‘whack’ – the wing mirror caught the wing mirror of a parked car.

“Told you so,” I said

On the way home the same thing happened – albeit to a different car. I gave Mrs D a searching glance but said nothing.

Two days later, she did it again.

“Pull over”, I said “I’ll drive”

“I’m all right’, said Mrs D. ‘I can drive’

‘You’re not all right’, I said. ‘Your judgement of distance on the left side of your body is crap. There won’t be a car between home and work with an undamaged wing mirror at this rate.

Later, when Mrs D was complaining of a terrible headache I drove her to the A&E Dep of local hospital to have my suspicions checked out. A few neurological tests and a scan confirmed the cancer has spread from her lungs to her brain.

She is on steroids at the moment, which seem to be helping. Plan is for further CAT Scan – this time of her chest and stomache area – to see if the cancer has spread anywhere else in her body. If it has, then a further course of chemotherapy will be considered if it is thought that might be effective. We are also awaiting an appointment for her to have a course of radiotherapy to her brain to try and shrink the cancer there.

This thing they call ‘living’ is so bloody hard at times !!!

Living is hard but there can be so many benefits and it seems that the two of you have lived a wonderful life together. While these stories are painful they speak of a deep connection and hopefully an abundance of memories.
