Ho, Ho, Bloody Ho !!!

February 19, 2010

3rd Aug 2009

Xmas came early to our house this year. There was no tree in the corner of the room. No decorations depending from the walls . But it was Xmas, nonetheless.

Since Mrs D feels she will not be here in December to celebrate Xmas with the Grandkids, we moved Xmas forward from Dec 25th to Aug 3rd.

The presents were bought and carefully wrapped – the latter ripped apart in seconds by little hands eager to discover the goodies inside.

There was no Xmas dinner. Instead, a takeaway from the local KFC eaten in the garden. But the kids enjoyed it just as much.

The weather was kind and the kids ran about the garden playing as Mrs D watched from the patio.

It was an unusual Xmas celebration – a mixture of sadness and joy. Inevitable perhaps, given the circumstances, and one that was not unforeseen but still hard to take for all that.

It was – at one and the same time – the best and the worst ‘Xmas’ Mrs D has experienced. Heart bursting with happiness to get the chance to spend a Xmas with her grandkids. Then inconsolable with grief when she took farewell of them at the end of the day – perhaps for the last time.

Then as if she needed any reminder of her impending mortality, I left her alone for a few minutes while clearing some of the ‘debris’ left behind by the grandkids and her brain chose that moment to play a trick on her. I heard an almighty ‘crash’ and found her a crumpled heap on the floor, bleeding from the mouth where she’d bitten her lips and with bruised chest and hip where she’d fallen heavily against the furniture.

‘Merry Xmas ?

P.S. you’re pretty amazing yourself, Laura. You share many qualities with Anita and would probably have got on really well if you had met
